Diversity Book Discussion - Monday, February 8, 2010, 6:00 p.m.
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime" by Mark Haddon.

A national bestseller, this novel is a great read. The story is told from the point of view of an autistic 15-year-old boy. We will talk about the book as literature, and also discuss autism and the experience of parents raising a child on the autism spectrum. "Gloriously eccentric and wonderfully intelligent." The Boston Globe.

Parents as Cultural Partners

The Diversity Committee is launching a new project called PARENTS AS CULTURAL PARTNERS. Parents and guardians are invited to share their cultural expertise and skills in the classroom. In the PS 199 community, 28 different home languages are spoken, and many cultures and ethnicities are represented. If you are interested in sharing your expertise in a country or region, or your special talent in a cultural art form (i.e. music, storytelling, dance), please fill out “Parents as Cultural Partners.”

Your PTA Donations at Work!

Each year the PTA provides a check for every teacher to start-up their classroom with needed supplies.   Many of our teachers have sent thank-you notes to the PTA.   You can view them here.

P.S. 199 WINS 2009 UNSUNG HEROES AWARD FROM LANDMARK WEST!

LANDMARK WEST! is a non-profit award-winning community group working to preserve the best of the Upper West Side's architectural heritage.  This year they are awarding P.S. 199 an Unsung Hero award thanks to work done by our first grade teachers and students.   “Unsung Heroes” are those individuals and institutions who—in some way, shape or form—help to advance the cause of preserving our neighborhood’s special architecture and sense of place.    Please click here to learn more about the award and the award ceremony.

  • Auction
    • Subcommittee co-chairpersons – one or more people to solicit advertisement for monthly newsletter and catalog from local businesses
    • Subcommittee co-chairpersons – oversee solicitations, rallying parents to bring in solicitations and to assign people to target certain businesses and types of donations

PS 199 Family Giving

Whether your children are just entering PS 199 or are in their final year, there is no question that our principal, Katy Rosen -- and all of the teachers on her team -- have vision for what a gold standard public school education should be. As best said by third grade teacher, Chris Miller, “By supporting our school, parents have helped create an optimal and nurturing learning environment where the children truly flourish.” Please give generously to continue this tradition.
