We wanted to take this opportunity to go over the procedures that apply when lice are found and to give you some information about lice.
PS199 PTA pays a qualified company to check our student body for lice 4 times during the year after every major school break
1. in September - upon returning from summer recess
2. in January - upon returning from December recess
3. in March - upon returning from winter recess
4. in April - upon returning from spring recess
Note 1: Students that are found with lice(bugs) are sent home that day (Department of Education policy). Students that are found with nits(eggs) return to class. Both students upon returning to school the next day, must be checked by a technician or school personnel before returning to the classroom. Parents are contacted by school personnel upon verification that their child has nits or bugs.
One week after each of the four checks, classes that are found to have several cases of nits or lice are rechecked.
Currently 199 PTA contracts with the company LiceXchange. Parent Volunteers assist at each check with the coordination of the classes. New parent volunteers are encouraged to volunteer to maintain a streamlined process to check over 800 students quickly with minimal disruption to classroom academics. lice-enders@PS199PTA.org. Outside of the 4 contracted checks, if a family has found they have Nits/Lice please let teacher and/or Lice Committee know. If there are several children found in one class to have positive cases of lice, the parents may request through the PTA to have that class checked by the current contracted lice screening company. See Note 1.
PTA sells at cost in the school's main office, the lice shampoo used by the current contracted lice company. Shampoo: $20 and Shampoo/Lice comb: $25
